Abstract The pattern of tetraspore germination and early stages of development in Padina gymnospora (Kuetzing) Vickers (Phaeophyta, Dictyotales) have been investigated for a period of seven weeks. The early stages of development were äs earlier reported for other Dictyotales. However, new findings were found with respect to shoot differentiation. The erect shoots were initiated both from the meristematic activity of the ‘Central nodule' and from shoot initials which developed at intervals along the length of the rhizoids. The biological significance of the rhizoidal shoots is discusseden_US
