Abstract
Clinical experience indicates that psychiatric patient populations are being neglected in HIV preventive work and furthermore the psychiatric problems of persons with AIDS are often undetected and under reported. This paper explores the reasons for this observation and discusses the implications for clinicians and counselors. This review focuses on two issues: the urgent need for preventive efforts geared to the psychiatric patient population; and for the early detection of psychiatric problems in HIV positive medical patients by primary care physicians and counselors.
